| Further Information: is an edible mushroom native to Mediterranean regions of Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, but also grown in parts of Asia. Variety ferulae is found growing on the roots of the plant Ferula communis (giant Fennel), hence the variety name. It has a thick, meaty white stem and a small tan cap (in young specimens). Cap diameter often exceeds 15cm and its perimeter shape is variable. Stalk relatively short, laterally placed Edible, formerly collected for sale. It has little flavor or aroma when raw. When cooked, it develops typical mushroom umami flavors with a texture similar to that of abalone. Scarce. |
